Shopee Code League | Experience

During Summer 2020, Shopee held its inaugural coding competition. This time round, it was called Shopee Code League, the competition were filled with tough challenges and training workshops. Being an enthusiast, I grabbed the opportunity and signed up with a team. However, as we were having our internships and these workshops taking place right after work, and the competitons happening over the weekend, it was a pretty tiring experience nonetheless.

We did not manage to try out all the challenges (there were 8), but we did try our best in trying out some. As most of it were data related, and I was more of a software development, backend kind of guy, these challenges were certainly challenging for me. These data related challenges include manipulating data with Python Pandas, running Machine Learning models (for image and text processing) and sentiment analysis. Naturally we didnt do very well in these challenges. I still remember using a for loop to loop through the excel sheet of data for one of the challenges. Upon seeing other participants' solutions and how quickly it ran (with Pandas), I was determined to improve my skills especially in the Data Analytics area.

Thus, I took up several Analytics modules the next semester in my university - Analytics Foundations, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Social Analytics. These modules gave me enough depth and knowledge to complete the above challenges, which I may try out soon as I still have the relevant datasets. I look forward to the next Shopee coding competition, hopefully producing better results the next time.
